Researching the iPod as a Teaching and Learning Tool
As part its mission to improve access to high quality education through collaboration among Tennessee Board of Regents institutions, the Regents Online Campus Collaborative is pleased to announce a pilot project in Using the iPod as a Teaching and Learning Tool.
Project Goals:
- Enhance the pedagogical application of portable media players
- Create a body of learning objects incorporating audio and/or video podcasts
Project Objectives:
- Leverage the wide spread use of portable media players as an existing base for content delivery
- Facilitate sharing of resources and ideas relative to educational uses of podcasting
- Establish a statement of best practices in audio and video podcasting
Expected Outcomes:
- Increased awareness and increased skill set in production techniques, delivery mechanisms, and pedagogical applications of podcasting as measured by number of faculty and staff trained in podcasting
- One hundred learning objects incorporating audio and/or video podcasts available for use in any TBR college class
- Publication of project results and mini-conference presentations
Who Should Apply:
- This project is open to any and all faculty teaching in the TBR system including technology centers, community colleges, and universities.
- This includes those teaching web courses and those teaching in the traditional classroom setting
Resources Distributed:
- Loan of a 5th generation (video) iPod for one semester
- Software to support audio and/or video production
- Training and support from the ROCC Training & Technical Services department
- Training will include podcast design, production techniques, post-production techniques, and delivery mechanisms

Criteria, Deadlines and Decision Dates:
- Proposals will be evaluated relative to pedagogical design, feasibility, innovation, and range of possible adoption of learning objects produced
- Project proposals will be evaluated by a five member team comprised of one ROCC staff member, one member of the TBR Distance Education Deans and Directors, one campus instructional technology staff person, and two TBR faculty
- Deadlines for application: April 1 for iPod use during summer ’06; July 1 for iPod use during fall ’06; December 1 for spring ‘07
- Decision dates: April 10 for summer ’06, July 10 for fall ’06, December 11 for spring ‘07
